July 11th, 2022, 6:30 – 7:30 pm EDT – Write What You Love!
Writers are told all the time – “Write What You Know!” But what happens when we go a step farther and instead “Write What We Love?” How does generating our story ideas from topics, concepts, or themes close to our hearts help us create work that is more likely to connect with our readers, even those who are very different from us?
This one-hour workshop will turn our eyes inward to imagine story concepts that stretch outward, grabbing readers’ heartstrings and tugging at them. We’ll explore the idea that writing about something specific to us surfaces a platform for reaching toward themes that end up being universal to everyone. Each participant will be encouraged to explore what they love and why (no one is required to share, but that option will exist). This exploration will lead to story concepting and initial plotting. Finally, participants will take home an exercise that uses the workshop’s learnings to continue to explore their story and selected topic.
No registration is required. This event is for Middle and High School students.
After class, books will be for sale and a signing will occur.
